Pastor John Wunderlich

Scripture: Luke 2:22-40

Title: “What the Future Holds”

Theme: Vision/Mission

Details: As the New Year begins we will spend some time in prayer and praise.  Let’s focus our hearts and minds on the things of God and pray for God’s clear direction for our church family in 2006.

Jan 8, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

Scripture: John 16:13-14 (also 2 Kings 6:8-17)

Title: Stewardship, part 1: Vision

Theme: Stewardship, Discipleship

Details: One of the most important aspects of good stewardship is developing spiritual vision.  Then we will see what only the spirit can reveal to us.  One reason we hold tightly to what we have (time, talents, gifts) is that we don’t have any spiritual vision.  First, seize moments and opportunities (dream).  Second, imagine what God can do (paint).  Finally, see with spiritual eyes (show).

Jan 15, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

Scripture: James 4:13-16 (also Psalm 90:12)

Title: Stewardship, part 2: Time

Theme: Stewardship, Discipleship

Details: Stewardship of time is not about better time management, but spiritual effectiveness.  The key to spiritual effectiveness is to know what really matters, go for depth rather than length, and find satisfaction in God.

Jan 22, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

Scripture: Colossians 3:1-4

Title: Stewardship, part 3: Resources

Theme: Stewardship, Discipleship

Details: Stewardship of resources is tough.  “Stewardship month was a fine idea until today.”  It’s tough to get our spending and our living in line with God’s values without some serious help.  We get that help from the Bible: don’t get too attached to things, give joyfully, and update your passport (remember you are a citizen of heaven).

Jan 29, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

Scripture: Exodus 4:1-5 (also Romans 11:29)

Title: Stewardship, part 4: You

Theme: Stewardship, Discipleship

Details: God asks Moses, “what is that in your hand?”  God asks us the same question; essentially “what are you doing with the things that you already have?”  To use what is already at hand we need: confidence (boldness), conviction (about who God is and what He’s called you to) and conformity (obedience)

Feb 12, 2006 - - Cancelled due to snow
Feb 19, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

Notes

7th Sunday after Epiphany

Boy Scout Sunday

Kid’s Theme: Valentine’s Day

Scripture: John 3:16; John 15:14-17

Title: Cliff Notes 1 – Why God Loves You

Details: It’s hard for many people to understand that God can love them in light of the way they feel about themselves.  Today we will examine the notion that God really does love us and why.

Feb 26, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

  Notes

February 26th – Transfiguration Sunday

Kid’s Theme: The Bible.  Reading the Instructions.  The Bird house.

Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:14-17

Title: Cliff Notes 2 – How to Find the Help Desk

Theme: Discipleship

Details: God doesn’t want us to be without help, direction, and guidance.  That’s why God gave us His Word – The Bible.  We can turn to the Bible because it is reliable, true, and consistent.

Kid’s Theme: Questions I would like to ask God?

Scripture: 1 Peter 3:8-4:19

Title: Cliff Notes 3 – Why Does Bad Stuff Happen?

Theme: Service

Details: If God is really loving and good, how come God allows so much evil to exist (and flourish) in our world?  It seems like bad things happen to good people – why does that happen?

March 12, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

March 12th – 2nd Sunday in Lent, Pioneer Girls Sunday Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:14-27, Colossians 1:18-20

Title: Cliff Notes 4 – Why You Need the Church

Theme: Fellowship, Worship

Details: The Church is full of hypocrites.  Who needs it?  I can be a good Christian without being involved in a church, right?  Right?  Let’s see what God says about the church.

March 19, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

 Notes

Scripture: Micah 6:8, Luke 10:25-37

Title: Cliff Notes 5 – What You Do Matters

Theme: Service, Mission

Details: Being a follower of Jesus is about more than what you believe.  It’s also important to think about what you do, how you live, and what you think.

Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11

Title: Cliff Notes 6 – Who Is Jesus, and Why You Should Care

Theme: Worship, Discipleship

Details: Jesus is very clear about who he is and why he came.  We need to understand that he called himself healer, redeemer, and God’s Son.

April 9, 2006

Palm Sunday

Pastor John Wunderlich

Notes

April 9th – Palm Sunday

Kid’s Theme: The kids will help hand out the palms.

Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11

Title: Holding Out Jesus

Theme: Vision/Mission

Details: It’s always struck me the way Jesus responded to his arrest, trial, crucifixion and death.  He quietly endured whatever they threw at him because his mission was so clear.  If we are to let the same mind be in us that was in Christ Jesus – how would we respond to our trials and struggles?  How clear is our vision?  If our vision is clear, that will carry us through anything we have to face!  We need to “work out our salvation (verse 12),” “shine (v. 14),” and “hold out the word (v.16).”

Pastor John Wunderlich

  -

April 16th – Easter Sunday

Kid’s Theme: Tell Me the Story of Jesus (song)

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Title: A Fresh Start at Easter

Theme: Resurrection

Details: In this chapter, Paul gives us a summary of the Gospel message: its short, sweet, and to the point.  It’s a good Scripture to remind us what Easter means – so that all of us can get the message!

Being An Acts 2 Church Series

1. Worshipping Like an Acts 2 Church

“… to the breaking of bread and of prayer.” – Acts 2:42b

“Everyday they continued to meet together in the Temple courts.” – Acts 2:46a

God is calling us “to a deeper place,” and we know it!  The earliest believers knew that worship was a divine appointment with their Creator and they took every opportunity to join together for that purpose.  What should worship look like at Christ Church ?

April 30, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

Notes Sunday, April 30, 2006

Being An Acts 2 Church Series

2. Sharing Like an Acts 2 Church

“Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the Apostles.” – Acts 2:43

“Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.” – Acts 2:45

“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” – Acts 2:47b

The first Christians knew that they had to share the Good News of Jesus with others.  They did so with their words, their worship, their love and their action.  That’s what we have to share at Christ UMC.

Being An Acts 2 Church Series

3. Connecting Like an Acts 2 Church

“All the believers were together and had everything in common.” – Acts 2:44

“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts …” – Acts 2:46b

There can be no true community where there aren’t genuine and trustworthy relationships.  These followers of Jesus knew that they needed to spend time together and open their homes to one another in order to truly get to know one another.  How do we do that at here, in the “Family of Christ.”

Pastor John Wunderlich

Notes Sunday, May 14, 2006

Being An Acts 2 Church Series

4. Growing Like an Acts 2 Church

“They devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to the fellowship.” – Acts 2:42

The goal of following Jesus is to become more like him.  We want to grow into something better than we are now.  We do that in small groups and Sunday school classes.  When we humble ourselves and allow others to teach us – growth happens.  At Christ Church , we want followers of Christ to grow and bear fruit.

Sermon Notes1

   Discussing the DaVinci Code

June 4th – Pentecost

Cracking the Code: DaVinci, Jesus and You.

Communion

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8

Title: Jesus, Mary and the Church.”

Theme: Resurrection, Divinity of Jesus

According to characters in The DaVinci Code Jesus never died, didn’t think he was divine, married Mary Magdalene and had a daughter.  Can we know for sure?  What does history have to say about these amazing claims?

June 11, 2006

Pastor John Wunderlich

Sermon Notes2

June 11th – Trinity Sunday

Cracking the Code: DaVinci, Jesus and You.

Connection Point: Passing the Peace

Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:14-17

Title: The Bible and Constantine

Theme: The Bible’s authority and reliability.

Central to the theme of The DaVinci Code is the Roman Emperor Constantine’s role in creating the church as we know it today.  Are the Bible, the Apostles’ Creed, and most of the theology of the church are all inventions of Constantine ’s imagination?  Who was Constantine ?  How did we get the Bible we have?  Can we trust the Church’s theology and ideas?

Sermon Notes3

June 18th – 2nd Sunday after Pentecost

Cracking the Code: DaVinci, Jesus and You.

Father’s Day

Connection Point: Kid’s Time - Father’s Day

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:12-21 (also John 8:31-36)

Title: Secrets, Conspiracies, and Truth

Theme: Truth, Freedom, Revelation (God has revealed Himself)

The DaVinci Code points to conspiracies, clandestine groups and secrets kept for centuries.  Some of the characters believe there has been a massive cover-up to keep the truth from all but the privileged few.  Does God really reserve “knowing Him” for those few who are part of a select group?  How can we really know truth about God?

June 25th – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost

VBS Sunday

Scripture: Matthew 22:1-9

Title: Fiesta!

As in years past we will sing the Vacation Bible School songs and review the themes from each day of VBS.  The VBS theme this year is “Fiesta.”  We are all encouraged to wear Mexican themed hats, etc. to add to the flavor.  Someone tell Mark Rust to bring his maracas.  Also, we’ll be picking some kids to read the Scriptures for each day’s theme.

July 2, 2006 Pastor John Wunderlich   July 2nd – 4th Sunday after Pentecost

Service of Prayer and Praise, Communion

As the second half of the year begins we will spend some time in prayer. We’re going to focus our hearts and minds on the things of God and pray for God’s clear direction in our lives, our church, our community and nation. Also, Janey Giles will share with us about the work of Hope Alive – a ministry in Frederick County that works with homeless women and children.

July 9, 2006 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes July 9th – 5th Sunday after Pentecost

New Series: How Jesus Did Church – Fellowship, part 1
Today: What Fellowship Means
Scripture: Luke 8:19-21/1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Fellowship is not a word that gets used much outside of the church. What does God say fellowship is all about? Can it be something more than casual conversation and light snacks? When God talks about fellowship it’s about connecting with people in relationships that matter. There’s nothing casual about it.

July 16, 2006 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes July 16th – 6th Sunday after Pentecost

How Jesus Did Church – Fellowship, part 2
Today: Longing to Belong
Scripture: John 15:9-17/Ephesians 2:19-21  Drama: Act One - "True Fellowship"

Loneliness and depression are more common than ever before. We are disconnected, lonely and apathetic people. That’s not the way it has to be. It’s not even the way it should be! Inside of each of us is a longing to get involved in something really important – something beyond ourselves. God placed that longing in you with the hope that you would use it for Him.

How to Defeat Temptation - Week 1

Looking for Fruit

James 1:2-12

The first step to defeating temptation is to understand it as an opportunity to grow rather than a hindrance to growth. If we understand how temptation works, we are on our way to overcoming it

How to Defeat Temptation -  Week 2

The Road to Victory

1 Corinthians 10:11-13

There is always a pathway to victory.  Your struggle with temptation is never hopeless.  God has provided a way that is clearly laid out in the Bible.  If you follow God’s Plan for defeating temptation your on the road to victory!

How to Defeat Temptation -  Week 3

Time Is On Your Side

Philippians 1:3-11

Defeating temptation will be a process that happens over time – but time is on your side.  That’s the way growth happens, a little at a time.  We’re slow learners and we’re hampered by our sin, so growth doesn’t happen as fast as we like.  But we don’t have to be in a hurry.  Time (and the Lord) are on our side.

The Secret of a Loving Church

Romans 14:12-19

Connection Point: Communion

How to Be a Family That Doesn't Fall Apart

When a church offers genuine love to people - to each other and to the one's who come - you'll have to lock to doors to keep people out.  Our love for one another is the strongest evangelism program we have. So how can we help that love grow and keep from becoming distant or splitting into factions?

The Bible's Role in Discipleship

Matthew 7:24-29

Connection Point: Sharing Testimony

Why the Bible Is So Important

Fellowship. Discipleship. Defeating Temptation. Getting Victory in your life.  We've talked about all those things over the last couple of months - but there's a key piece we don't want to forget. God's Word (the Bible) is the means by which all this happens.

MW Musings: Developing Your Life Picture

November 5th - 21st Sunday after Pentecost Momentum: Getting to the Finish Line! Part 4 Connection Point: Communion

"Vision: What is Your Life Picture?"

Having a vision of our "life picture" enables us to know where we're going and how we're going to get there. You can't run someone else's race, you have to run your race. But to do that you have to know what your race is. Can you explain your race plan? How clear is your mission, your message, and your strategy?
