Scripture: Genesis 4:2-12
Series: Giving to God

Title: “Right or Left?” Giving Outward
Theme: Stewardship/Discipleship
Details: From the beginning God expected that his graciousness toward us would be returned in graciousness and adoration toward him. He gave us the very best, the first fruits of His kingdom – Jesus. In return he expects the first fruits of ours. Are we giving God our first fruits or our leftovers? Stewardship has a vertical component – reaching up. Key focus: God wants our very best!

Series: Giving to God

Connection Point: Small Groups Video
Scripture: Deuteronomy 24:17-21
Title: Living Together - Giving Upward
Theme: Stewardship/Discipleship
Details: God calls us to live together in a community. He wants that community to be known for its generosity and hospitality. You can’t be generous and hospitable with your hands closed tightly. Generosity and hospitality require a posture of “giving.” Stewardship has a horizontal component – reaching out. Key focus: God wants us to give to bless others!

Series: Giving to God

Scripture: Luke 16:10-15
Title: Tithing - Giving Inward
Theme: Stewardship/Discipleship
Details: Jesus was a giver. He modeled giving to God, giving towards others and honored God’s principle of tithing. Stewardship has a transformational component - it changes you. Key focus: God wants you to give so that you become more like Christ. This is giving inward – ironically when we honor God by giving, something good happens deep inside of us.

Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11/Luke 19:28-38

Title: The Humility of Jesus

There is more here than Jesus' "Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem." There's more humility here than royalty and the passage from Philippians bears that out. Jesus enters Jerusalem knowing what's coming. His humility is key to all that will follow this week. Without it, Easter doesn't happen.

Genesis 37:1-11
Series: Trusting in God's Plan: Lessons from the Life of Joseph

Holding Onto Your Dream: Wherever there is a dream there is a dreamer. When God puts a dream (a vision) on our hearts we need to hold on to it tightly. The clearer the dream the better, because the dream is what sustains us when things get tough. What are our dreams? Are they clear? How can we grasp them tighter? Dreams are about vision, mission, and purpose; organizations have them, churches have them, people have them. Let’s get a clear picture of our dream.

Genesis 37:12-36
Series: Trusting in God's Plan: Lessons from the Life of Joseph

Trouble’s Comin': Into every dream some trouble will come. Our dreams do not go unopposed. We know that trouble will come, but when it does we act surprised. It would be smarter for us (and for the dream) to be ready (prepared) for trouble when it comes. If we’re prepared, the chances of the dream (and us!) surviving are much better. So … what can we do to be ready for the troubles that we know will come. Where and from who will our help come?

Genesis 39: 1-23
Series: Trusting in God's Plan: Lessons from the Life of Joseph

Transforming Your Circumstances: Circumstances can overwhelm the dream … if we let them. We always have a choice of how we will respond in the face of adverse circumstances. Joseph’s circumstances went from good to bad almost overnight. What can we learn from how he responded in the face of adversity? Joseph’s faithfulness, his willing to serve and bear fruit show us how to keep the dream alive in the midst of even the most difficult times and situations.

Genesis 45:1-21
Series: Trusting in God's Plan: Lessons from the Life of Joseph

The Hope For Change : One reason we persevere in the middle of trouble is that we know things will change eventually. When we lose the hope that things will ultimately get better, the dream quickly dies. Hope is the key to understanding God’s plan when it is obscured by trials. Sometimes (as for Joseph) it’s up to us to take steps to make sure that hope stays alive. Give what you’re struggling with today, what are the steps that you need to take to keep hoping?

Genesis 50:15-21
Series: Trusting in God's Plan: Lessons from the Life of Joseph

Seeing God’s Plan Fulfilled: When the dream stays clear, when we’re prepared for the bumps in the road, when we can transform negative circumstances into opportunities for service, when we are ready to take the next hopeful step, we are ready to see God’s plan fulfilled. It may not look like it did at the beginning, it may have had some unexpected twists and turns, but the dream (and our trust in it) are always worth the wait. What’s left for you to do in order to see God’s plan bear fruit?

June 3, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes0603

The Prodigal 1 - The Wandering Brother  - "Coming Home to God" This prodigal was "exceedingly wasteful" with the blessing and inheritance of his father. Like the father in the parable, God give us incredible freedom. Often we use that freedom to walk away from him because we want a life free of God's demands. That life leads to disaster, but its never too late to come home to God. Don't waste your inheritance from your heavenly father; come home.
June 10, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes0610

audio archived

The Prodigal 2 - The Extravagant Father - "The Extravagance of God" The father is a prodigal as well - "extravagant and extremely generous." Our God is "prodigal" in the same way - God gives exceedingly abundantly all that we can ask or even think. God's extravagance flows out of his great love for us. It is a ove that is unconditional, unsurpassable, and untamable. God's love is bigger than your sin. God's love is beyond your control. God's love is without peer.
June 17, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes0617

audio archived

The Prodigal 3 - The Unforgiving Brother - "Learning to Forgive" The older brother tries to "drive forth or push away" from his brother and his family. His unforgiving heart pushes him away from his brother. His lack of understanding of grace drives him away from his father. This is the most difficult "prodigal" to consider. We see ourselves in the wandering brother; we see God in the extravagant father, but we fail to see a lesson for ourselves in the unforgiving brother. As a result un-forgiveness and ignorance rob us of the deepest blessings God has to offer.

"Opening Yourself To God’s Blessings" [6th Sunday After Pentecost] 2 Kings 5:1-14

God uses all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. In this story God uses an Israelite slave girl to reach Naaman, the commander of Aram’s army. Who is God using to try to reach you and are you listening? What is getting in the way of your blessing?

Report from World Changers mission project in Durham, NC

This is a Psalm of praise and a call to prayer. The meditation will highlight verses 16-20 as an affirmation that God answers prayer.  The prayer time will replace the sermon in the order of worship. Some of the time will be structured, some will be open-ended. We will also offer the opportunity for anointing if anyone so desires.

How Jesus Did Church – Discipleship 1

Luke 10:38-42 Jesus wants disciples who avoid the distractions of the world and are ready to focus themselves on the things of God. Discipleship is sitting “at the Lord’s feet listening to what he says.” Discipleship demands single-mindedness.

How Jesus Did Church – Discipleship 2

Matthew 4:18-22 and Matthew 8:18-22 “May you be covered with the dust of your rabbi.” This traditional Jewish blessing reminds us that discipleship is about emulating the one that you follow. When Jesus says “follow me,” nothing less will do. Discipleship demands commitment.

God’s Answer to My Inferiority: Matthew 6:9, People say, “I don’t feel good about myself. I try to boost myself up through self-esteem clinics or status symbols, or I buy things or take therapy or go on drugs – whatever – just to build myself up.” God says, “No, your value comes from our relationship.” Our Father in Heaven means that when you become God’s child – you matter. Your significance comes from your relationship with God.

God’s Answer to My Questions: Matthew 6:10, We ask, “Why am I here? Who am I? Where am I going? What is the meaning of life? Why is all of this happening to me?” Those are confusing questions. God’s answer is “Thy kingdom come.” God has a master plan for the world. It means that God has a personal plan for your life. When you get involved in God’s master plan for you, confusion starts to go away.

God’s Answer to My Worries: Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.” We worry about everything: health, finances, our future, our schedules. God says we should relax. God will take care of it. God provides all we need on a daily basis.

God’s Answer to My Guilt: Matthew 6:12, “Forgive us our debts.” None of us is perfect. We’ve all sinned. We’ve all made mistakes. We’ve all blown it. And the result of that is regret. That’s just a fact of life. God says there’s one antidote for guilt: forgiveness. That’s what Jesus came to do – bring forgiveness. Jesus wants to forgive us completely and instantly and continually.

God’s Answer to My Broken Relationships: Matthew 6:12 (especially the last part of verse 12 – “as we forgive our debtors.”, Our biggest problems are people problems. When we do things that hurt other people, it causes guilt. When other people do things that hurt me, it causes resentment. What I’ve done to others and what they’ve done to me strains and breaks my relationships. There’s only one answer: forgiveness. We need forgiveness for our guilt and we need to extend forgiveness to others for what they have done to us. We don’t let go of past guilt because we’re hanging on to guilt and grudges. God says, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” That’s why you need Jesus. He gives us all the power to forgive and let go of the past so you can live in the present and look forward to the future.

God’s Answer to My Temptations: Matthew 6:13, “Lead us not into temptation.” All of us have bad habits that we can’t seem to get control of, areas that are seemingly beyond are ability to change. We know these things are wrong, but we just don’t know how to stop them. We give in. God can help us break free and God can help us change.

God’s Answer to My Fear: Matthew 6:13, “Deliver us from evil.” It you think you’re not afraid of anything, you are fooling yourself. There’s a lot of evil in the world. There are things out there that you ought to feel frightened about. But the Bible says we can be delivered from evil by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we feel like victims we think the circumstances of our lives are out of control and we feel helpless to deal with them. We can’t control our circumstances, but God can. God offers deliverance. Deliverance from hurtful memories, from scars we’ve carried since childhood, from evil in our lives right now. God wants to help.

Laity Sunday

November 25, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes112507 Christ the King: Today is a day on the Christian calendar called "Christ the King Sunday."  It's a day set aside to proclaim Jesus as King.
December 2, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes120207 Conspiring to Change the Future! (Romans 13:11-14/Matthew 24:36-44) [1st Sunday of Advent] - Worship At Jesus' birth, night is invaded by the light. Everything about us from that moment on changes. Our future is linked to this birth. We are no longer children of darkness but children of light. We don't know the day or the hour when God will draw history to a close, but until then we live in the light. We live in anticipation of and in testimony to God's future. We are starting a revolution-live in the light and draw others to Him who is the One True Light.
December 9, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes120907 Conspiring to Change our Relationships! (Romans 15:4-8/Matthew 3:1-12) [2nd Sunday of Advent] - Relational Giving (Connecting) Advent is a time of re-thinking our relationships. As Christ comes to restore our relationship to the father, Christ also comes to restore our relationships to each other. John the Baptist understood this and preached and taught a message that restored justice and wholeness to relationships. This Christmas we must work toward connecting with one another in real and meaningful ways.
December 16, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes121607 Conspiring to Change our Priorities! (James 5:7-11/Matthew 11:2-11) [3rd Sunday of Advent] - ReDistribution/Water (Justice) James tries to get us to take a second look at our circumstances. He wants us to see that our priorities and God's plans don't always match up. When they don't - it's our priorities that need adjusting. For John the Baptist, the time had come to dramatically rearrange his priorities in light of Jesus' coming. The time is here for us to do the same. Our priorities need to reflect God's concern for those who are suffering, poor and in need.
December 23, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes122307 Conspiring to Change Everything! (Romans 1:1-7/Matthew 1:18-25) [4th Sunday of Advent] - Resisting the Empire (Prophecy) Paul clearly sees everything that has ever happened in his life through the eyes of his relationship with Jesus. Nothing has happened, nothing is happening, nothing will happen that isn't seen through the lens of faith. Joseph's life gets re-oriented in much the same way. After the angel's visit he can't look at the world the same way again. Paul lived a life that moved against the flow of his culture. Joseph's life ran against everything he had been taught since he was a boy. For both men, after they encountered Jesus nothing was the same again. Part of the revolution is to re-claim Christmas! To do that we'll have to resist our cultural Christmas and follow after Jesus. Because of our encounter with Jesus at Christmas - nothing will be the same again.
December 24, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich Notes122407 Conspiring to Change Christmas! (Titus 2:11-14/Luke 2:1-20) [Christmas Eve] We're talking about a revolution. A Christmas that doesn't look like every other Christmas. Jesus' coming was a reality. It is a reality. We have to live like it's a reality. We just have to say "No" to a false and hollow holiday and say "Yes" to the Conspiracy. Christmas isn't Christmas until we understand the Good News (and share the Good News) - Jesus.
December 30, 2007 Pastor John Wunderlich No Notes A Service of Lessons & Carols - We will read the Christmas story from Luke 1-2 and sing songs/Christmas carols between readings.
